Oral Hygiene and Orthodontics

Regardless of age, when wearing fixed orthodontic appliances (“pins”), oral hygiene is very important. Indeed, the “pins” make brushing teeth more difficult, so it is easier to have an accumulation of dental plaque (and bacteria!).

The risks of poor oral hygiene
  • Gingivitis
  • Periodontitis
  • Cavities
1. Gingivitis
Bacteria in the dental plaque irritate the gums and can cause them to swell, bleed, make them more sensitive and take them off your teeth. Sometimes the negative effects are reversible once the “pins” are removed, but sometimes the damage is irreversible. For example, the gums may swell and remain swollen after the orthodontic treatment. So, you have to spend 2-3 years (and even more) to wear “pins” to have beautiful straight teeth, but you still do not have a beautiful smile because the gums are too inflated and deformed. Luckily, it corrects itself with surgery called gingivevtomy, but better avoided!
2. Periodontitis
Following gingivitis, bacteria accumulate and descend deeper and deeper between the gums and teeth, and bacteria can “grub” the bone around the teeth. This bone serves as a support for the teeth. So, the more you lose bone around a tooth, the less support there is for the tooth, the more it moves and you risk losing some teeth. So, you spend 2-3 years (and even more) to wear “pins” to have beautiful straight teeth to perhaps lose some and thus degrade your smile and your functions.
3. Cavities
It is very difficult to clean around the housings, near the gums and floss well. The bacteria that stay on the teeth, put in contact with the sugar of the food, create an acid and this acid can create cavities or weaknesses in the enamel (decalcifications).
